WJAA softball participates in the Souhegan Valley Softball League. This is a traveling league and involves playing against teams from the following six surrounding towns; Milford, Amherst, Brookline, Hollis and Bedford. Softball is open to all girls 7-11 years old (2nd grade and older). Evaluations will take place in March or April to determine the skill level of each player so that evenly matched teams can be created.
In past years, depending on turnout, WJAA has fielded two Rookie teams and one Minors team. WJAA does not usually field a Majors team, as most girls in this age bracket play on the middle school team. Middle school players who meet the league age requirements may play on the Minors team. Please see below for an explanation of the different levels.
This is the beginning level of softball. The players are introduced to the game of softball, learning the different positions and the basic rules of the game. There is emphasis on throwing, catching, fielding and hitting. Coaches pitch to their own players during games. Players must be 8 years old or younger throughout the season.
At this level, the girls begin to play more competitively, using umpires and following the rules of Babe Ruth. There is no coach pitching as the players pitch to each other. This level involves more rules and fundamentals of softball. Players must be 11 years old or younger throughout the season.
